Recently our college production of Hairspray Jnr was performed.  This was a wonderful success and we received amazing support from our community.  We would like to say a huge thank you to everybody. Year 12 Horowhenua College student Jamie Harper became the Horowhenua youth MP this year and wants to improve the problems youth are facing in his electorate. Jamie, 16, applied to Horowhenua MP Nathan Guy this year for the role and was accepted. Jamie said he was politically focused. “I know what issues are facing young people today through on my work on student council and youth voice, which allows me to engage with youth in this area.” This year Jamie helped organise a Gumboot Friday event at school. This year was the 54th year of the Ngā Manu Kōrero Māori Speech competition.  Our Horowhenua/Manawatu regional competition was hosted by Hato Paora College in Feilding and attended by 15 schools.  The aim of the competition is to encourage the development of skills and confidence of Māori students in spoken English and Māori. Nikita McDermott competed in the Senior English section with eight other schools.  Her prepared speech topic was “My culture is more than a performance” and her impromptu topic given to her 5 minutes before walking on stage in front of hundreds of people was “I believe in the teachers strike because…”.  She was amazing, well prepared and focused, taking everything in her stride.  She gave it her absolute best against seasoned and confident speakers.  She didn’t place but she is a winner in our eyes and we coundn’t have been more proud of her, and she of…

This year our 40 Hour Famine team decided to partake in several social actions within our school community and also our wider community.  These social actions were undertaken as part of the 40 Hour Famine annual nationwide social action that helps raise money for nations that are in dire need of resources to support their people to survivie.  This year the focus was on the South Sudan crisis in which many Sudanese have been displaced due to war and have taken refuge in Uganda. Alongside the national 40 Hour Famine, the ‘NUA 40 Hour Famine’ committee also participated in the “40 acts of kindness” programme.  Our most significant “acts of kindness” consisted of us helping our school environment by picking up and disposing of any litter around the school and also helping in the library with chrome books and shelving books.  We also donated lunch to the ‘Share the Care…

Last term we held our Open Evening for all Year 8’s and their parents and whanau who were interested in seeing what we have to offer here at college.  Thank you to those of our community who were able to attend, we enjoyed meeting everyone.  If anyone was not able to make it to our Open Evening but would like a guided tour of our college please contat us on office@horowhenua.webhost19.inspire.net.nz Also big thank you to our Senior Creative Catering team who catered the event.

Education Perfect Science is an online Science competition involving 100,000 students from all around the world.  A number of our students performed extremely well in this.  Our top performer was Ethan Roentgen who made the top 0.2% . This means Ethan was one of the top 200 students out of 100,000 from around the world.  It just goes to show tht acdemically, students from Levin can compete with anyone from anywhere on the planet. Well done Ethan!

The Level 1 and 2 Horticulture students have been enjoying learning new skills on the quad bikes including reversing with a trailer and a lot on the skills needed to avoid tipping!  Not only have they increased their skills but they have grown in confidence.  They will be assessed early next term on the quad as well as fencing and maintaining small engines and tools.

Horowhenua College opened its doors in 1940 and is celebrated as the only secondary school built in NZ during WWII.  The iconic main building is also celebrated, being only one of two colleges in NZ with this unique architectural design.  78 years later we still celebrate and are very proud of this heritage building as it represents the many successful students who have passed through its doors over the years. Recently, the Horowhenua District Council have completed their plan for future development of our town and the region.  Highlighting significant buildings contributes to the futuristic plan for the enchancement of our town.  HDC therefore generously provided a financial grant to install downlights across the college frontage.  The outcome is even better than expected.  Our thanks goes to HDC for enabling this to happen.  It is something for our whole town to be proud of.
