ANZ Olympic Schools Programme
We have recently joined the ANZ Olympic Schools Programme. ANZ has developed this programme with the New Zealand Olympic Committee to provide schools with resources to inspire and motivate New Zealand children through the magic and celebration of achievement the Olympics delivers. Every successful home loan drawn down of more than $50,000 from the ANZ will result in 800 credits for Horowhenua College to spend at the ANZ Awards Centre on resources covering everything from sports equipment to the latest in computer technology. 800 credits equates to approximately $400 of purchasing power. All that parents, teachers, or friends of the college need to do is mention Horowhenua College to the ANZ staff member completing their home loan and once the loan is drawn down the credits will be awarded to the college. Market Day Level 1 Business Studies
Over the course of 2 days, the Level 1 Business Standards students showed their wares, and sold plenty! The activity took place in the quad and students had just half an hour to sell as much of their produce as possible. The activity was part of Achievement Standard 90842 and, along with the business plan and other paperwork, is worth a total of 6 credits. The range of foods included hot chips, hot dogs, ice cream sundaes, chocolate brownies, chocolate cake, nachos and much more. A range of beverages was also on sale. Some groups had very long queues and sold virtually all their merchandise, while others were slower. However, all students participated with enthusiasm and endeavour, and were well supported by the student body and many staff. Science Trip to Victoria
On Thursday June 27 fifteen Year 12 Chemistry and Physics students travelled to Victoria University to experience Chemistry and Physics workshops. During the two hour Physics workshop the students got to observe magnets, superconductors, and liq-uid nitrogen and carried out an investigation into a radioactive substance. In the chemistry laboratory each student synthesised a component of aspirin while looking at ‘designer drugs’ then analysed their reaction product using thin layer chromatography. The students involved thoroughly enjoyed their day and were particularly impressed by the laboratory facilities available at Victoria.
Rock Climbing Club
Horowhenua Rock Climbing Club is a school club that meets every Wednesday during terms two and three. The club is made up of a variety of students from Year 9-12 with a mix of gender. Students work on increasing their climbing strength and skills while progressing from top rope climbing to leading. At the end of each term we visit Hangdog Climbing Gym in Lower Hutt to test our skills and fitness in another setting. With the upcoming National Boulder Series being held in Lower Hutt this year it is hoped a number of students will take part.
Canoe Polo Nationals 2013
On 22 March, five Nua canoe polo teams headed off to the nationals which were held in Feilding this year. The teams had performed well at the recent regional events but it is always hard to gauge how teams from other regions in New Zealand had performed at their regionals. The junior girls struggled initially to get their game together but with confidence and enthusiasm they improved as the tournament continued. They eventually made it to a memorable play off for third but lost to the Feilding High team. The divisional 2 girls also took a while to get things together and play some attractive polo. Their best game was in the medals play off. It all seemed to click and they easily beat their opposition for the bronze medal. A great effort from this team! Manawatu Secondary Schools Athletic Championships
Congratulations to all the students who competed at the Manawatu Secondary Schools Athletics Championships at the weekend in Palmerston North. We had a number of outstanding results. The school was represented with pride. Well done. Free Year 9 Health Checks
A free health check will be offered to all Year 9 students by the Public Health Nurse at the college. Notices were given to your Years 9’s Friday 8th to bring home. This is available in pdf format below. Should you not wish your child to have this health check please complete the “OPT OFF” form and return to the school office for the attention of the Public Health Nurse.
