Invitation to be a Host Parent for a Short Term visit
A group of our local students returned from an exciting trip to China on 19 April 2015. They were buddied by a student from the school (Pan Yu ZhiXin Middle School, Guangzhou) and also stayed with this family – their host family. This was a wonderful experience for our students and gave them a real taste of experiencing another culture with a Chinese family. During Term 3 we will have a visit again from Meijo University High School and Namiki High School. Meijo will be bringing 36 students to visit us from Tuesday 21 July to Tuesday 4 August and Namiki will be bringing 20 students who will be visiting us from Wednesday 19 August to Thursday 27 August. Our own students who went to China benefited greatly from staying with their buddy. We would like to offer the same experience to the students coming to visit us and ask…
Horowhenua College Field of Remembrance
Horowhenua College established a Field of Remembrance in the Quad as a way of acknowledging the service and sacrifice of those who lost their lives in World War I. Each school in New Zealand was allocated 30 White Crosses. Students had to construct the crosses then add a name to each cross. We were supplied with the names of 22 soldiers from our region who all died in service for our country. Also included was a nurse, heroes who won the VC, William Malone who led the Wellington Battalion, Sergeant Dave Gallaher, Captain of the All Blacks who was killed at Passchendaele and Private Basil Mercer the youngest to be killed – he was just 17 years old. 10 MH used their Social Studies periods this week to construct the crosses then laid out the Field of Remembrance in the Quad. From the Limited Statutory Manager
Kia ora koutou, I was disappointed to read the report about the College in the Manawatu Standard on Thursday 14th August. I decided to write a letter to the Editor saying that I thought the report in the paper was too focussed on bringing up the past instead of understanding the many great things the College does every year. You can see that this version is longer than the version in the paper because to fit my letter in the Editor left out my description of the 2013 prize giving. Yet what lies at the heart of a school and its community if it is not students, their whanau and their shared accomplishments. I have asked that this full letter be posted here for the whanau of Horowhenua College to read if they so choose.
