China Visit by Horowhenua College students 2015
Sister School Exchange with China: This opportunity to form a Sister School relationship with PanYu ZhiXin Middle School, Guangzhou came as a result of Robyn Keeling’s visit to PanYu ZhiXin Middle School, Guangzhou in May 2014 with her agent, Shino. During this visit the Principal, Mr Zhang Xiongji invited Horowhenua College to bring students to his school in April 2015. Shino later came to stay with Robyn in November for two weeks which gave Shino the opportunity to get to know Horowhenua College and some of the staff and students. Student Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (SCHOGM)
The Student Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (SCHOGM) came to a close earlier this week after an exhilarating two days of debate and discussion of issues facing the 53 member states of the Commonwealth. This was such a fascinating experience to be part of and has helped me gain a better understanding of international relations and the process by which negotiations take place between heads of government where a secretary-general facilitates the creation of peaceful resolutions. I hope very much that Horowhenua College will continue to be involved in many future SCHOGM meetings to come! Simply put, it was so much fun and also very entertaining to get a short glimpse into the Parliamentary debating chember with some very fast paced banter between NZ’s politicians. Liam Burgess, Year 13

Shakespeare Festival
Horowhenua College has been competing in the Shakespeare Globe Centre NZ University of Otago Sheilah Wynn Shakespeare Festival for the past 5 years. In this time we have not only brought home the silverware every single year, but also been selected to perform at the national festival two years running and won two national awards. Congratulations to our amazing 2015 team for some wonderful performances; with five fabulous entries, stunning costumes, courageous performers and an amazing crew, we have had one of our best years yet. Congratulations to the very talented actors, dancers, directors and backstage crew who give their all to the festival every year and make us proud. Miss Perry, Teacher in Charge of Drama
Melodies of the Disturbed
Balancing school work and creating and performing metal music isn’t easy but for the past eight months four Level 2 students have managed to do just that. Geordie Parrant, Kurt Thoms, Joshua Anderson and Kaidan Downs, AKA Meoldies of the Disturbed, have taken their fast paced, melodic metal music all around the lower North Island, playing shows in Palmerston North, Kapiti, Wellington, Foxton and of course Levin. The journey started at the end of 2014 with the help of Business Studies teacher, Mr Taylor, who helped come up with the band’s name. Over the Christmas holidays we got together with the aim to write and play original music. Our first show saw us play three songs at the local AEB venue and it was clear from the reaction of the crowd we had something special. We continued to refine our skills and worked to play as many shows as possible.…
