Tramping trip
Outdoor Education is a subject that uses the medium of the environment to develop a students performance skills and personal attributes. Many of the activites involve working with others in challenging situations to promote personal growth.
The school is well placed geographically to use some of the wonderful natural resources in the Horowhenua region specifically the Tararua ranges, Manawatu River and local mountain bike tracks. As many of our locations for practicals are close to school we feel we offer a very practical course at all levels of the curriculm. We do use other locations around New Zealand for specific trips. The school is fortunate to have a 11m high indoor rock wall, an outdoor swimming pool and are fully resouced for all outdoor activites on offer.
The department is also extremely fortunate to have highly qualified staff that hold Nationally recognized qualifications in a number of key outdoor areas. The school has been recognised for it's excellece in our programme especially in relation to safety by gaining the externally moderated qualification Outdoors Mark August 2011.
The school is a member of the ODENZ group which promotes schools that have a particular strength in Outdoor Edcuation.
Outdoor Education units contain both theoretical and practical components and are assessed in class and out in the field.

Naomi Miyamoto - Japan, July 2014 to April 2015
Hi. I’m Naomi from Japan. I have stayed in New Zealand for 10 months and have had a great time in Levin and New Zealand. I really like Horowhenua College, especially the ESOL class because the teacher was so kind to me and the class was a lot of fun. All the international students and the local students and teachers were all very kind and friendly to me. When we went on the North island trip with school (International Department), that trip was so good and a lot of fun. I liked the Waitomo caves and Hobbiton (the set from the movie). The scenery was so beautiful. First my image of New Zealand was lots of sheep and lots of nature, but New Zealand to me now is about lots of beautiful places. Thank you so much for everything. I will never forget my amazing experience at Horowhenua College and in New Zealand. » View all testimonials
