Article courtesy of Sadie Beckman, Reporter, Horowhenua Chronicle, Wednesday 13 December On the first day of their Christmas holidays, a Year 10 Social Studies class from Horowhenua College was back at school ready to help others in the community.  The students are planning to bring festive cheer to local children from families living below the poverty line who may otherwise be facing a meagre Christmas. The class is participating in a social action project, fundraising to buy and collect gifts and items to fill shoeboxes, which would then be donated to children in need.  More than 70 gift-wrapped boxes were being filled by the students with items such as toys, books, colouring and craft supplies, toiletries, treats and a toothbrush, as part of the Horowhenua Strengthening Families Network Fill a Shoebox appeal.  The class raised $825 in donations to put towards the appeal, and delivered talks to other classes at…

3rd Place in the HETTANZ Student Fashion Awards Abigail Paxton has shown her amazing fashion design talents in achieving 3rd place in the Senior Creative category of the Home Economics and Technology Teachers Association of New Zealand (HETTANZ) Student Fashion Awards. Students from around New Zealand sent in entries to a range of categories. Sarah Wirth, HETTANZ President said, “The outstanding level and variety of garments from students all over the country shows that Textiles Technology is being taught in an inspiring and creative way.” Abigail’s gypsy costume was designed to  make a cultural garment with colour, show freedom of the traditional dance, be a metaphorical representation of music and rituals, considerate of the religion, and make use of their techniques and maybe tools, all tied together in one garment. It includes individually beading approximately 11,900 beads as well as designing and creating the 25 coin necklace using plaster moulds,…

Congratulations to Rachel Hucker who had a great weekend at the first regional dressage competition on her new horse Gus (show name Must be Magic). She did her first ever level 2 test and came fifth, and her score was a Horse of the Year qualifier. She also qualified for level 1. She placed in 4 of the 5 tests they did, including 3rd place in the AMS Young Rider Series.  Well done!

Kia ora tātou Only a week to go till school holidays!  I do hope all our college staff and students have a good break over the vacation.  Thank you to the more than 40 parents and caregivers who have responded to our school charter survey – we so appreciate the time you have given to do this. In Term 4 we will be working on our new charter goals and your comments will help us produce the key aspects of these goals. In our August board meeting we spent the bulk of the evening meeting with the Heads of Faculties (HOFs). Earlier in the year we had a meeting where we identified priorities for 2017 and the focus of our evening meeting was reporting back on how these priorities were being addressed, and on the identification of the enabling and limiting factors for increasing student achievement. Going forward into 2018…

The 34th annual Jimmy Carter Quiz competition, hosted by Manawatu Lions, took place in Palmerston North on Wednesday. Our team in the photo are (from left around the table) Jesse Dahya, Jasmin Beach, Madison Walsh, our Lions’ coordinator, Jotham Harris (Captain) and Oliver Bau. Questions ranged from aspects of the America’s Cup, to the speed of thunder, the spelling of local Maori names, and definitions of rainfall. After the half-time interval Horowhenua College was in 1st place (we have never before been there!) but after a closely fought last hour we were pipped by 2 points by PNBHS. For this we won trophies, library books, Christmas cakes and a model of the Sky Tower. The team was coached by Mr Smith, mentored by Mrs Corbett and supported on the night by Mr O’Brien. Next year our aim is clear: a win. Roll on 2018!
